  I had the pleasure of two days of guided grouse hunting with Maine Upland Guide service. First, in a year where the state biologists were claiming grouse were going to be significantly harder to find due to a rainy spring and summer, our guides Dave and Mike and their dogs were still able to provide several significant opportunities for the clients to get birds. It is clear that they do tons of scouting, data collection, and analysis to ensure successful hunts. I was lucky enough to get multiple opportunities and harvested birds. This was truly an exceptional hunting experience due to the hard work of these gentlemen and their wonderful dogs.

Second, the accommodations and service stand head and shoulders above much of the other options available. Dave and Mike were outstanding hosts and made sure time at camp was relaxing, laid back, personable, and full of great food and drink.

Third, as someone who is relatively new to upland game, the guides taught me a significant amount about grouse behavior, hunting tactics, and the benefits of certain gear that make everything more enjoyable. To me, part of hiring a guide is to learn, and these guys did an outstanding job of teaching. I already miss grouse camp and cannot wait to return. This was in many respects a dream trip, and one that was reminiscent of how sporting camps from previous eras are talked about. I never one felt like an inconvenience to the guides, I never once felt like money was the primary motivating factor, and I feel truly lucky to have had such a trip. 

  Hidden away in the deep woods of Jackman, Maine, this hunt is truly a traditional upland adventure. You will hunt through the remote wilderness of Northern Maine where you will pursue ruffed grouse and woodcock with seasoned guides that have over 30+ years of experience alongside their expertly trained dogs. Each hunt day begins after an early morning breakfast where you will hunt from ~7:00 AM until lunch, after lunch you will have an evening hunt which goes ~2:30 PM to dark. After a long day in the field, you will return to a rustic hunter’s cabin where you will enjoy one of many delicious meals such as steaks, roast chickens, salmon, wood fired pizza, and more. For those looking for a great upland hunt where you will pursue truly wild bird in an even wilder place, this is a phenomenal hunt!

Even in a year, such as this, with bird numbers being low due to a wet spring I still had multiple flushes and opportunities to shoot each of the two days I hunted with them. Mike and Dave have access to thousands of acres of private and public lands to hunt which they have scouted and maintain notes on past and present bird activity.

 Had a great girls hunting weekend! Food was delicious and lodging exceeded my expectations of "hunting camp" (hot showers, comfortable beds, laundry). Most importantly, Mike and Dave put us on the birds! They'll have you laughing all day. Gorgeous location and area of Maine are the icing on the cake!   

 Dave and Mike run a top-flight (pun not intended, honestly) guide service for upland birds. I'm a relatively new hunter; before the two days I spent with Maine Upland Guide Service, my bird hunting experience was limited to game preserves in my home state. Shortly after I started hunting, I listened to the audiobook version of Burton Spiller's Grouse Feathers and knew that I wanted to experience a New England upland bird hunt, and I was fortunate enough to discover Maine Upland Guide Service. Dave and Mike made this novice hunter feel at home immediately upon my arrival and worked hard to make my two days with them a success, notwithstanding my lack of experience. I look forward to walking the roads and covers of northern Maine with them again, hopefully soon. 

 What a wonderful time my son and I had at Maine Upland Guide Service with Mike. The hospitality, facility, and food was above and beyond any expectations. Simply enjoyable and relaxing.    Such a wonderful time. Dave and Mike are fabulous guides and tremendous hosts. I learned a lot from them about grouse habitat and behavior. We flushed lots of birds. I'm not the best shot, but I certainly enjoyed the excitement and I took two. The lodge couldn't be nicer. Coffee and breakfast, out for hunt, back to the lodge for lunch, back out, then a great dinner and evening chats. This part of Maine is stunningly beautiful, and I enjoyed the walking very much. This was a truly memorable experience. I'm so glad I did this, and truly appreciate Dave and Mike making it a wonderful experience.
